In the fall of 1896, King Thanh Thai issued a decree to build an iron bridge. In April 1897, Governor General of Indochina Doumer came to Hue and discussed with the court to focus on investing to have long-term sustainable construction. The construction of the bridge was assigned to the Eiffel firm

When Truong Tien Bridge began to be built, King Thanh Thai was the one who laid the first stone. After two years, the bridge consists of 6 spans of steel beams in the shape of ivory combs (semicircle), the ironwood floor is completed.

The cost of building the bridge at that time amounted to 400 million Indochinese dong, which was not a small amount.

In 1904, after being put into use for 5 years, the bridge was toppled by a storm. It was not until 1906 that the bridge was restored and completed.

In 1937, during the reign of King Bao Dai, the bridge was repaired more firmly and more widely. At this time, the bridge has more paths for pedestrians and cyclists.

In 1946 during the war against the French colonialists, the bridge was demolished.

By 1953, the bridge was completely repaired. However, during the 1968 Tet Offensive, the bridge continued to be destroyed and damaged and it was not until 1991 that it was restored and completed in 1995.

In 2002, Trang Tien Bridge was installed with a modern color changing LED lighting system.
